Back in 1945, Theodore Masters Peterson also known as “Sosed” (which is Slovenian for neighbor) or simply just known as “The neighbor.” Theodore enjoyed playing with his friend named Ike Quentin Cornelius Gershowitz and lived in a house located on 1910 Friendly Court, Missouri, US with his parents Roger and Adele Peterson who worked at the Raven Brooks station of weather and meteorology.
During adulthood, Theodore built an amusement park which resulted in the death of a young boy. Sometime after this, Theodore moved to Germany and met a kind Kindergarten teacher named Diane and together they had a son named Aaron, born in 1983 and then a daughter named Mya, born in 1985. Theodore builds another amusement park where an accident happens resulting in the death of four teenagers. The family escapes by moving back to Theodore’s childhood home and things continue on. Eventually, Ike (Theodore’s old friend) dies and was most likely murdered and Theodore’s life begins to go downhill from there.
A family of three named the Roth’s moves in across the street from Theodore. Nicky is the son of Jay and Luanne Roth.
Nicky befriends Aaron and a group of people such as Enzo Esposito, Maritza Esposito and Trinity Bales who all come together to create a team called the Rescue Squad.
Theodore, yet again, builds an amusement resulting in another death, the death of a girl named Lucy Yi. One day, Diane and Theodore go out and they end up getting into a car crash which severely injured Diane. Theodore rushes her to the hospital when unfortunately she flatlines. Theodore returns home in a state of sadness, which confuses Aaron and Mya but they soon figure it out and hug Theodore. Aaron begins acting aggressive towards Mya in his grief and one day, he hides her doll which causes her to search for it. She finds it on the roof of Theodore’s home but Aaron accidently knocks her off the edge, killing her. Theodore buries Mya’s body in his backyard and this is where Theodore is driven insane from his losses. Theodore locks Aaron in his basement to prevent him from getting hurt and hangs up missing posters to make himself seem less suspicious. This is where Act 1 begins.
The protagonist, Nicky Roth is running down the street and he kicks his beach ball. While he attempts to pick it up, he is frightened by the sound of a child screaming, which is Aaron. Nicky, filled with curiosity investigates as Theodore locks Aaron in his basement and hides the key to basement on his second floor. After completing all the puzzles, Nicky gets into the basement although he finds no one there and just before exiting, Theodore chases Nicky. Nicky gets caught, thus beginning Act 2. Nicky finds himself trapped in Theodore’s basement which Theodore did in act to try and have the feeling of being a father again. Aaron unlocks the door to Nicky’s room and Nicky escapes the basement, finding out that a massive fence was built around Theodore’s property to prevent Nicky’s escape. While Act 2 happens, the Rescue Squad overreacts and thinks up odd ideas to safe Nicky like a rocket ship. Act 2 is also when the events of HN2 happen. Nicky escapes and tells the cops which causes Theodore to get arrested and his house is eventually burned down. Nicky moves out of his house and moves into an apartment in the city but he is evicted because he doesn’t pay rent. Nicky is forced to move back to his childhood home and while exploring Theodore’s house’s burned husk, he hallucinates a shadow-entity which is truly a manifestation Nicky’s fear as he has PTSD from Theodore. Nicky goes to sleep and dreams Act 3 and Act Finale. While dreaming, Nicky must complete three fear rooms which represent Nicky’s other fears such as a grocery store, school and a dark closet. In his dream, Theodore’s house is much larger and more surreal which is just his child-like mind recreating Theodore’s house which Nicky used to see as a giant house. Nicky wakes up from his dream and is no longer living in fear.
