With the current games and books released, this is the entire Five Nights at Freddy’s lore/backstory:
A guy named William moves from England to a small town called Hurricane with his wife and three kids. It’s in this small town that he meets a fellow named Henry, who has his own kids, and Henry and William become good friends. They decide on a business venture to open up a family diner that sells cake, with the main attraction being two animatronic suits. These suits can either function as animatronics or spring lock into suits that humans can wear—keep that in mind, it’ll be important later.
Henry wears the Freddy suit, and William wears the Bonnie suit. Their business is booming for Fazbear’s Family Diner, so much so that they open another branch called Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. William creates four new animatronics: Bonnie, Chica, Freddy, and Foxy. However, what we don’t know about William Afton is that he’s a crazed lunatic and absolute psychopath. It’s assumed that Henry created an animatronic called the Puppet to protect his daughter Charlie from danger.
One day, at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, Henry’s daughter Charlie gets locked outside the pizzeria. The Puppet can’t save Charlie, as it’s stuck in a box. As William pulls into the driveway, he murders Charlie and drags her into an alley. Once the Puppet finally escapes the box, it goes outside to protect Charlie, only to find her dead. What happens next is that Charlie’s spirit inhabits the Puppet, so it’s now possessed by her spirit, and Henry loses his only child.
While all of this is happening, let’s focus on William Afton’s family. He has two sons and a daughter, but right now, let’s focus on the boys. The younger one is Dave, and the older is Mike. Dave is scared of the animatronics, and Mike sees this as a wonderful opportunity to prank him.
At Dave’s birthday party, Mike decides to put Dave near the mouth of an animatronic version of Freddy to give him a big kiss. Instead, the spring locks on the suit fail due to the moisture from Dave’s tears, causing the animatronic to bite down on him, killing him. This marks the infamous “Bite of ’83.” The death of his youngest son spirals William Afton into even more chaos and psychotic behavior.
William lures five children into the safe room of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, dressed as Spring Bonnie, and kills them. But where does he hide the bodies? Well, when Afton was designing the new suits, he created compartments specifically designed to fit children inside the animatronics. Because of this, no one was able to find evidence. The Puppet, witnessing all of this, decides to assist the children. But there are five children and only four suits—where does the extra child go? The fifth child is stuffed into the Golden Fredbear costume. Now, six kids have their souls stuck in animatronics.
Shortly after, Afton gets fired from his own company, and the restaurant is closed down due to health violations. However, William Afton doesn’t stop there. After the closure of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, he creates a new company called Afton Robotics and opens a location designed to murder children. Why, you ask? After murdering the five children, Afton discovered a way to become immortal—by harnessing a material called Remnant. When the kids die, they release Remnant, which binds their souls to objects. This is how the missing children and Charlie were able to possess the animatronics.
William uses this knowledge to create Circus Baby, who can lure children with games and then crush them inside her stomach. Meanwhile, William’s youngest child is dead, and his eldest, Mike, is doing something irrelevant for now. But Elizabeth, William’s daughter, attends a private party to unveil the new location in the franchise. Elizabeth gets too close to Circus Baby and is killed.
Due to this incident, Circus Baby’s Pizza World is shut down under the excuse of a gas leak, though Afton continues renting out the animatronics. William, ever the concerned father, sends his son Mike to locate and free Elizabeth’s soul, trapped inside Circus Baby.
The new star of the story, Michael Afton, survives the first four nights at the new location until, on the fourth night, technicians are instructed to scoop out the shells of the animatronics. The Scooping Machine, also infused with Remnant, removes the endoskeletons. All the animatronics combine their parts into a monstrous entity called Ennard.
On the final night, Michael ends up in the scooping machine. Baby’s true intentions are revealed—she scoops out Michael’s organs to make room for Ennard, who inhabits Michael’s body like a hermit crab. Michael survives because of the Remnant keeping him alive. Ennard uses Michael’s body to escape the complex, but eventually, Michael’s body deteriorates, and Ennard escapes into the sewers. Miraculously, Michael reanimates.
Michael’s new goal is to find his father, William Afton. Meanwhile, William returns to the abandoned Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza to dismantle the old animatronics. However, by doing this, he accidentally awakens the spirits of the dead children, who confront him. In a panic, William puts on the Spring Bonnie suit he used to kill them, but the spring locks fail, crushing and killing him in an ironic twist.
Years later, the Freddy Fazbear franchise is turned into a horror attraction. William’s body, trapped in the Springtrap suit, is found and becomes part of the attraction. When the building catches fire, William survives, possibly due to Michael’s intervention. Despite significant damage, Springtrap (William) is still alive.
Ennard, having ejected Baby, now becomes Molten Freddy, while Baby reassembles herself as Scrap Baby. Henry, William’s former friend, steps back into the story. In his grief, Henry devises a plan to end it all. He opens a new pizzeria under the Freddy’s franchise to attract the remaining animatronics, including Michael Afton.
Michael, now working as a security guard, helps Henry by collecting all the animatronics into one facility. Henry’s plan is to gather them and burn them all to free their souls. On the final night, Henry delivers a powerful speech before setting the building on fire, killing the animatronics, including Michael and William Afton.
Though it seems like a peaceful ending with all loose ends tied up, a new company later takes control of the FNAF franchise. It’s rumored that before William’s death, he uploaded his consciousness into binary code. In a virtual FNAF experience, William’s consciousness enters the game and starts taking over people’s bodies. He eventually finds a host named Vanessa, creating an alter ego called Vanny.
In this new chapter, the animatronics—Glamrock Freddy, Chica, Roxy, and Monty—are somehow controlled by William Afton. Glamrock Freddy, however, malfunctions and teams up with a boy named Gregory to defeat the other animatronics. They end up exploring an underground complex where they find William Afton, still alive, alongside a monstrous creature called the Blob. In a final battle, Gregory and Freddy burn the complex down. Just as William is about to capture them, the Blob drags him away.
Once again, it seems like all loose ends are tied up. But who knows what’s next, as the books and DLCs continue to expand the story.
